Picture Day is Friday, September 27th!
Reading: In reading this week, we will discuss making predictions. Students will practice making predictions based on details and prior knowledge. We will also discuss summarizing the "BIG" parts of a book. This can be a challenging skill for many students. I encourage your to practice it at home. Writing: In writing, we will continue to explore personal narratives. Students are learning to add quotes, write like a "storyteller, and elaborate. We are learning to write "seed" stories that share a small moment in great detail. Math: In math, we will continue to practice adding and subtracting money from a given value. We will also explore different types of patterns and finding the "rule." We will complete our unit 1 assessment on Friday. Social Studies: In Social Studies, students will be introduced to the Wampanoags. Students will learn about the land available to the Wampanoag's in Massachusetts.

Reading: This week in reading, we will zoom in on comprehension strategies. The strategies will focus on character traits, setting and making predictions. Great questions to ask your child at home include: 1. Who is the main character? 2. Where is the character now? 3. What is the character doing? 4. Where is the character going? 5. What just happened? 6. What do you think will happen next, based on what has happened? Continue to have your student monitor their comprehension at home.
Writing: We will continue to work on personal narratives. Students have selected a “seed idea” that we will begin to develop. Math: In math this week, we will explore adding and subtracting on an open number line. We will end the week by counting and adding money in dollars and cents. Many of Unit 1 and 2 skills are a review from second grade. Your student should feel confident in these skills. Social Studies: This week we will begin our Social Studies curriculum. The primary focus of Unit 1 is Massachusetts. We will identify and explore the Massachusetts State Symbols. We will end the week by discussing the Wampanoag and Indigenous People. Happy first FULL week of school! We are continuing to learn routines and procedures in third grade, but we have also started our reading, writing and math curriculums! This week in a snapshot: Reading: We will continue to discuss building a reading life at school and at home. Students should have found a quiet, comfy and relaxing spot to do their nightly reading. We will learn to track our reading progress using a reading log. Students will keep a reading log at school. We will discuss methods for finding and sharing interesting books. Students that are interested in a book, tend to read for a longer period of time. Finally, students will be assigned a reading partner. Students will begin partner talks. Partner talks help build reading comprehension. Writing: We will start our narrative writing unit. We will begin the unit by creating writing goals. Students will observe writing samples and determine "Do's and Don'ts" of a writer's notebook. We will also begin brainstorming personal narrative ideas. Math: In math, we will continue to review our number sense. We will discuss different ways to represent a number (base-ten, fractions, pictures, number sentences, etc.). We will review adding and subtracting on an open number line. Finally, we will review adding money with coins and dollars. Notes:
This week we will brush away our summer cobwebs and begin our reading and math instruction! We will focus on developing a strong classroom learning environment and establishing daily work routines.
Reading: Our major focus this month will be on "Building a Reading Life." This week we will discuss how to develop the best possible reading life, establish positive reading attitudes, and learn how to pick "just right books" for our reading bins. We will also spend time discussing our reading goals and learning how to track our progress. Math: In math, we will begin the year with a series of lessons called Inspirational Math. The activities encourage students to think critically, explore different solutions, and use a hands-on approach. Students will learn to use their "math brain" this week. In addition, we will welcome our math specialist, Ms. Majors, to our classroom to help inspire and encourage our math mindsets. Notes:
